El cierre percutáneo de la orejuela izquierda ha surgido en los últimos años como una técnica capaz de evitar la necesidad de tratamiento anticoagulante en los pacientes con fibrilación auricular y alto riesgo embólico. Aunque los estudios aleatorizados sólo se han llevado a cabo en pacientes candidatos a anticoagulación oral crónica, son aquellos con contraindicaciones para la anticoagulación los que probablemente pueden recibir un beneficio más claro, y constituyen la mayor parte de los pacientes remitidos para este tratamiento en la actualidad. Por tanto, esta técnica deber ser conocida no sólo por los cardiólogos, sino por todos los profesionales que manejan pacientes con fibrilación auricular. En este documento, se abordarán las indicaciones del cierre percutáneo de la orejuela izquierda, qué debe evaluarse en los pacientes candidatos a este tratamiento y qué tipo de manejo debe seguirse tras el procedimiento. Por otra parte, se revisarán brevemente las evidencias que existen actualmente sobre esta técnica.
