En la última década hemos asistido a un progreso importante en el tratamiento del cáncer colorrectal metastásico (CCRm) que se ha traducido en una mayor superviviencia de los pacientes y en una mejoría en su calidad de vida. A esto han contribuido diversos factores, destacando los avances en el rescate quirúrgico de la enfermedad oligometastásica, la incorporación de nuevos medicamentos dirigidos (sobre todo antiangiogénicos y monoclonales antiEGFR y recientemente inmunoterápicos) y la mejor selección de pacientes gracias a biomarcadores, como las mutaciones en RAS o BRAF o la inestabillidad de microsatélites (MSI).

Pero aparte de la incorporación de estas nuevas herramientas al arsenal terapéutico, hemos avanzado en el mejor conocimiento de cómo utilizarlas a lo largo de la evolución de la enfermedad de forma que maximicemos el beneficio para el paciente y minimicemos la toxicidad. Se trata del concepto de tratamiento del continuo de la enfermedad.
