Gemelaridad en Reproducción Asistida


Los embarazos gemelares son vistos desde diferentes puntos de vista por pacientes y médicos. Las pacientes, muchas veces animadas por la experiencia cercana de alguna amiga, o bien por la idealización del deseo de ser madre por partida doble, llegan incluso a desear tener gemelos. Sin embargo, el punto de vista del médico suele ser diferente, ya que somos conscientes del potencial riesgo de los embarazos gemelares, tanto para la madre, como para los recién nacidos.

Hasta la irrupción de los tratamientos de reproducción, los embarazos gemelares no eran muy frecuentes. Desde el punto de vista epidemiológico, el 10 % de los embarazos espontáneos son gemelares. Sin embargo, como consecuencia de los tratamientos de reproducción asistida, se han publicado porcentajes de embarazos gemelares de hasta el 30 %. Con respecto a las gestaciones múltiples, de 3 o más, son extraordinariamente raras de forma natural (10 % embarazos gemelares, 1 % embarazos triples, 1 por 1000 embarazos cuádruples). Se puede decir que, en la actualidad, la mayoría de embarazos gemelares y múltiples se deben a la realización de tratamientos de reproducción asistida.
