Ventilación no invasiva domiciliaria (VNID) en pediatría


Los sistemas de ventilación mecánica actúan generando de forma artificial un aumento de la presión atmosférica con el fin de incrementar la presión alveolar en el pulmón del paciente. Cuando el uso de la ventilación mecánica se realiza sin el uso de un tubo endotraqueal ni de una traqueostomía, se considera no invasivo. La VNID es un tratamiento extrahospitalario de soporte ventilatorio, en el que no se invade la vía aérea del paciente.

A pesar de que la ventilación mediante traqueotomía es más eficaz, ésta aumenta la complejidad del manejo del paciente y conlleva el riesgo de complicaciones potencialmente graves. También disminuye la calidad de vida del paciente y de sus cuidadores, al repercutir en sus vidas no sólo desde el punto de vista médico, sino también social, emocional y económico.
